Step inside the home of writer and tastemaker Alicia Lund. As a former Elle Fashion Editor, buyer and stylist living in Northern California, Lund’s distinctive eye can be seen throughout her home as well as on her eponymous lifestyle website. With recent additions to her collection from Tappan artists Satsuki Shibuya, Leigh Wells and The Heidies, Lund’s family home functions as a representation of all that she loves.
"For me, it's honestly just intuitive––I am instantly drawn to pieces and artists and I think it shouldn't be so serious! Fill your home with works that make you feel something or bring you joy looking at them everyday!”
Q&A:
Why would you recommend Tappan to someone looking for art?
Tappan is an amazing site for discovery, inspiration and to seek out new and emerging artists!
What inspires you to collect the work of emerging artists?
I love knowing I'm supporting emerging artists and new talent. And it's fun to follow them on their journey over the years!
What is your earliest memory of art, and what led you to start collecting it?
My parents have always had an appreciation for art which I think naturally was instilled in my sister and I. And my grandpa also had an incredible art collection that always stands out in my mind from my early childhood memories. Some amazing abstracts and sculptural pieces that went with the style and mood of his home so well. It really felt like walking through a gallery which I've always loved.
How has the sentimentality of your collection evolved over time?
There are a lot of sentimental aspects and memories attached to many of the pieces in our home now. A number of pieces I've collected over the years from my travels and those all have standout / special memories attached to them. ...Memories of wandering into galleries in Paris, art trips in Oakland and SF with girlfriends, and seeking out the artists and going to their shows which is always fun. I also love a vintage hunt so I have a few pieces I've found while shopping in New York and on 1st Dibs.
Is there a particular type of art you collect?
I am definitely drawn to a very similar type. I guess I would call our collection linear and I love abstracts... I sort of unknowingly have bought a few checked pieces of art as well over the years (I have a thing for checks!). I love Joan Mitchell / Cy Twombly and am drawn to any pieces that have the same resemblance. They evoke a mood, have pops of color and are calming at the same time.
Where and when do you feel the most creative?
I do most of my writing in the morning ~ I've always been a morning person! Also whenever I'm traveling.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
My trips to New York (we used to live there and it's still the city that excites me the most to be in)! I follow a lot of interior designers, reading magazines, and visiting art galleries. My girlfriends.
For new collectors, do you have any advice you wish to impart? Do you have a collecting ethos or philosophy that you want to share?
Just buy what you love! Pop into galleries when you're traveling. Follow artists on Instagram (you can reach out to them directly to see if they have any available works). Don't over think it... if I love it I know I'll find a space for it. We are probably almost overflowing at this point, ha. I also really love small pieces on large walls and large pieces in smaller spaces. It all works and can be really interesting / tell your story!
The nice thing about Tappan is that it is really approachable in an art world that can feel overwhelming. It's nice that you have a gallery space now for people to visit as well.
Describe your collection in three words.
Memories. Linear. Abstract.
Share three people in the creative space who are inspiring you right now.
Colleen Herman ~ we have a couple of her pieces and she's just always so inspiring to me!
Diana Al-Hadid ~ I just went to her show in SF and it was incredible!
Not a person but I've been really into The Expert for home and love that you can shop your favorite interior designers selects. I think it's also making the interior design space feel more accessible as well.
Alicia Lund's Favorites
“We have been looking for a larger piece to fill this wall for years now and this painting by Satsuki Shibuya couldn't be more perfect. It strikes the perfect balance we were looking for... and feels like the most peaceful energy. We wanted to bring color into the room and yet find a piece that was very calming... that wouldn't completely take over the space / make the room feel smaller. The subtle pop of green also matches our kitchen island perfectly and pulls a lot of the colors we have in our home together.”On A Boy Named Åron by Satsuki Shibuya
“All of the Heidies photography is so beautiful ~ such a cool collaboration!! I'm obsessed. I find them to be very interesting and makes everyone stop and take a second look which is what I love about art!”On Form H2-2 by The Heidies
“I've been drawn to Leigh's collages and drawings for a while now, I just find them really interesting and beautiful. I love that she is a local, Sausalito artist and I love making floral arrangements so her floral pieces really speak to me especially.”On Versos 10-06-09 by Leigh Wells
