Lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Caroline Walls is a Melbourne-based visual artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, and sculpture. Walls' work explores the fluidity of the female form, themes of intimacy, human connection, and the layered complexities of womanhood—often navigating a space between figuration and abstraction. With a background in fashion art direction in London and New York, Walls brings a distinctive eye for composition and color to her visual language.
Walls has presented eight solo exhibitions in recent years, including Touching From A Distance and Mother Lover, and her work is held in private collections around the world. Walls’ practice has been widely recognized in publications Vogue Living, Architectural Digest, and Vogue.
STATEMENT
"My practice centres on the female experience—its intimacy, strength, and emotional depth. Working primarily in oil on linen, I use a limited palette and soft layering techniques to create images that feel both vulnerable and grounded. The figure and fabric often blur into one another, becoming symbols of connection, memory, and transformation. I’m drawn to the spaces between bodies—both physical and emotional—and to the quiet power held in those liminal moments. Each work is an attempt to hold presence and absence at once, inviting reflection on what is seen, felt, and left unsaid.
Drapery recurs through my work, both with paintings in which figures gently embrace and in more ambiguous compositions where gathered pools of flowing fabric gesture to rich emotional worlds even in the body’s absence. The fabric takes on a life of its own, embodying the presence, movement and emotion of the figure. Dancing between the seen and unseen, the tangible and symbolic, these elements act as both literal and metaphorical veils, representing the layers of experience and revelation that defines womanhood and human connection."
