Bewildered in "Burnt Yellow"
Archival pigment print
Divine Southgate-Smith’s digital artworks bridge the ancestral and the contemporary, reinterpreting traditional West African sculptural techniques within the digital realm. Drawing inspiration from the intricate craftsmanship of works like The Bronze Head from Ife, Southgate-Smith’s practice is an exploration of lineage, materiality, and transformation.
Through a fusion of digital modeling and textural depth, these pieces evoke the tactile quality of cast metal, carved wood, and earthen forms—honoring the enduring legacy of African artistry while pushing its visual language into new, speculative spaces. Each work serves as both a tribute and an evolution, preserving tradition while reimagining its future.
