Mixed Media Collage
Based on the Japanese concept of “MA,” Gunji uses a unique concept called "In-between" in his work. Crucial to his “Collectivity” series, “In-between” is his rule of finding hints for his work in the space between something — especially in the space between dichotomies. The purpose of his journey as an artist is to metaphorically capture the unspecified, subtle, and unspoken sensations and feelings he receives between himself and something else and put them into a tangible work of art. Being drawn to the use of vintage and current paper gives him a sense of traveling between time, past,and present as he mainly uses paper that has been used in old books, also leaving behind someone's signature or scribbles on it.
Usually, collage is a remix of the self and the environment, reconstructing printed matter, photographs, and other objects that are distant from the self, but Gunji sees the environment through his own filter, such as the surface of shining water or trees catching the wind, and draws them on paper and uses them as textures and patterns to create scenes that move the artist between the self and the environment.

About the Artist
Tadahiro Gunji
Multi-media artist Tadahiro Gunji's abstract works in his Collectivity series focus around his use of organic lines formed by the gaps between the separate pieces, and acknowledge the existence of invisible boundaries. These gaps also represent the relationship between space and matter; each part of the work trying to remind us of the complexity and composition of all particles. Select public collections include: The Museum of Modern Art (Toyama), Rad Hourani Art Foundation, and Italy Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa.
