Acrylic, oil pastels and oil sticks on canvas
In her latest series "Moving Palms", Monika Morito explores the dynamic interplay of technique and subject to create a sense of vibrant movement and emotion. At the center of these works are the palm trees, which she has long admired and which have a deep connection to her home country, the Philippines. Across the series, the artist elegantly creates a more connected and intimate interaction with the canvas by working with oil sticks. By applying the oil sticks directly with her hands and fingers, she is able to infuse each work with a distinct sense of feeling of immediacy and vibrancy. This method has allowed her to explore new textures and forms, resulting in paintings that are not only visually appealing but also rich in emotional depth.
The color palette in "Moving Palms" is intentionally bolder and more vibrant, reflecting the radiant beauty and different moods of palm trees. The process of painting with her hands was both empowering and grounding, allowing her to connect more deeply with her work and, in turn, her audience. The relief-like texture invites the viewer to immerse themselves in these vibrant landscapes and feel the movement and emotion that each work embodies.
