A classic shape for every ceramist, Gianfranco Briceño wanted to bring the Moon Jar to his own universe—and with his own spin. Aiming to create jars that had a more organic surface than is typical, Briceño mixed clays with porcelain slipping, natural oxides, and glazes that yielded unpredictable results: a process akin to excavating a long-lost piece from an ocean floor. In this way, Briceño acts as the archaeologist of his own work—creating the treasures he would love most to find. The recurring presence of male figures hearken scenes from ancient Greece, further lending the work a sense of historical significance and timelessness.
