under the rain V
quilted linen and canvas, pine and brass brad frame
Ethan Caflisch’s Under the Rain series extends the themes of his late 2024 exhibition, underwater, in the rain, emerging from a moment of resurfacing—only to realize the downpour continues. These textile paintings exist in the space between submersion and clarity, between endurance and quiet acceptance.
Each piece is built upon a foundational pairing, framed twice—once by canvas, once by pine—establishing thresholds that define and contain the composition. While fundamentally landscapes, these works are also meditations on optimism, stillness, and progress. Through layered fabric and deliberate construction, Under the Rain reflects the persistence of movement even when the storm does not pass.
In Caflisch’s Words:
this work is an offshoot from an exhibition i had in late 2024, titled ‘underwater, in the rain.’ these works have come after the fact, after coming up for air, realizing the water was still falling and would continue to do so. each piece has a foundational pairing, visible through two forms of framing thresholds - of canvas and pine. ultimately they’re landscapes, but additionally views of optimism and stillness and progress.

“...still constantly remind myself of H.D. Thoreau’s quote “rather than love, than money, than fame; give me truth.” I think this is a crucial mentality to have as an artist, and any other profession; that success, by any definition, will be found in making honest work.”

EVA CHEN ON ETHAN CAFLISCH
“...WE WERE REALLY LOOKING FOR PIECES THAT SPOKE TO US AND MADE US PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO ABSORB, APPRECIATE, AND REFLECT. CAFLISCH'S ART ABSOLUTELY HAD THAT EFFECT ON US.”
