walking the same steps again xxii
quilted linen and canvas, pine and brass brad frame
Ethan Caflisch’s Walking the Same Steps Again series transforms quilted textiles into meditations on routine, relationships, and place. Through pattern and repetition, these works explore the quiet rhythms of daily life—subtleties noticed, moments missed, and the gentle persistence of time.
Each piece stitches together past and present, forming connections through material and memory. The act of quilting becomes a metaphor for intimacy and distance, where layers of fabric, seams, and textures echo the ebb and flow of relationships. Landscapes appear as both physical and emotional spaces, framed to exist between here and there, presence and absence. In these textile paintings, Caflisch embraces process and imperfection, revealing the beauty in what is revisited, reworked, and rediscovered.

“...still constantly remind myself of H.D. Thoreau’s quote “rather than love, than money, than fame; give me truth.” I think this is a crucial mentality to have as an artist, and any other profession; that success, by any definition, will be found in making honest work.”

EVA CHEN ON ETHAN CAFLISCH
“...WE WERE REALLY LOOKING FOR PIECES THAT SPOKE TO US AND MADE US PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO ABSORB, APPRECIATE, AND REFLECT. CAFLISCH'S ART ABSOLUTELY HAD THAT EFFECT ON US.”
